FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at Digital audio format converter (ADAT™ <-> TDIF-1) and sampling rate converter The FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at is a digital audio format converter which is equipped with standard interfaces in compliance with the Alesis ADAT™ and Tascam TDIF-1 formats, and can process signals with a word length of max. 24 bits and a sampling rate between 32 and 50 kHz (in accordance with the specifications of both formats). External synchronization is possible through the use of an optional sampling rate converter module. For the format conversion the incoming signal on the selected input is converted and routed simultaneously to the two outputs (TRANSFER mode), which involves not only the necessary electrical conversion but also a conversion of signal formats, in compliance with the specifications standardized by the Alesis Corp. and Teac Corp. In order to synchronize the connected devices, the clock frequency embedded in the audio input signal is extracted and simultaneously sent to the Word Clock output in an electrically processed format. In addition to that, both inputs and outputs allow for a bi-directional configuration of both formats (X mode), in which audio signals can be converted simultaneously in both directions. By using the optional sampling rate converter module SRCM8-01 you can also convert the sampling rate, with reference to an external Word Clock or Super Clock signal, even during the format conversion in TRANSFER mode. During the format conversion process the sampling rate converter is hard-bypassed, i.e. switched out from the signal path. The FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at forms the link between the currently popular multi-channel audio formats. ADAT™ recorders can be directly connected as feeds to the TASCAM digital mixing consoles TM-D1000, TM-D4000T, TM-D8000, etc., and you can also use your ADATs as recording media for a multi-channel mix. In this case, the console will be the master sending the clock signal via the TDIF-1 interface to the ADAT™ recorder. When you want to create a mix with a 44.1 kHz sampling rate based on ADAT™-compatible audio material (48 kHz), the FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at (complemented by an SRCM8-01 module) can be easily clocked externally from the TASCAM console or a MUTEC SMART CLOCK using a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. At the same time, you can create a 44.1 kHz copy of the audio material on a second ADAT™ recorder connected to the ADAT™ output on the FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at. Similarly, the FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at will help you create a link between an audio workstation (computer) equipped with an audio card and a digital mixing console by TASCAM. Since audio cards usually have ADAT™ interfaces for lack of space, a format conversion will be necessary. For example, to record a mix with an TASCAM DTRS recorder via an audio card that has no Word Clock output, you can synchronize the recorder by connecting it to the Word Clock output on the FORMAT CHANGER multichannel at-without any need for external clock signals.
